The Niche’r You Go, The Quicker You Grow.

“Imagine writing a love letter addressed to “whom it may concern”. You would throw that out or at the minimum have deep reservations.

That’s what it’s like when businesses take a “we serve all” approach. Niching down is about deeply knowing your audience, where your gifts + skillset lays, and centering your offer around that!

Why You Need to Niche Down?

Niching down isn't just about working in a specific industry or offering particular services.

It's about identifying and owning your "secret sauce." It's about the mix of your approach, your process, and the tools you use.

How To Determine Your Niche?

  • Who loves you the most?

    • What customers are really engaged with what you do for them?

    • Return the most / Continues to buy from you

    • Is nice/easy to work with/serve?

  • What product/service are you getting the most business from?

  • Who do YOU love to serve?

  • Who is the most profitable?

The journey of niching down.

No matter what kind of business you start, whether service, product, or personal brand (creator/influencer, etc.) Niching down is the single most lucrative thing you can do. What what if you don’ t know what to niche down to because you have many interests and skills?

Let’s take the DFS journey as an example. When DFS first started, our goal was to work with high0end fashion brands while we also offered every type of design service from packaging, brand identity, web design, and honestly anything our clients needed. But over time, it became clear that doing all of those things was simply not working or helping us thrive. When taking a look at things, we got hired the most for web design services and coincidentally that was our favorite type of project to take on. So we niched down to web design and marketing services. And though we loved working with fashion clients, we realized it was actually working with creatives/artists and innovative entrepreneurs whose values we aligned with, that truly gave us joy. So we expanded the type of industries we worked with.

Our secret sauce aka niche became about our very specific process AND the combination of services we offered. We used the vast background of our Founder, Asia David, in being a creative director, working directly with artists at Print publications, and her own background in art history and marketing to craft an experience for the types of clients we love, creatives. With that said, it never turned other types of clients away, aka those who didn’t identify as being an artist or creative. Our niche of working with creatives actually attracted more work.

If you have a product-based business, you might recognize a specific product or variation of that product sells the most and drives that business, so that may influence you to go all in on that item/service.

In essence, niching down is about honing in on what makes you unique, what your audience is coming to you for specifically, and letting that shine. It's about embracing your individuality, which, in turn, attracts the right opportunities and clients to your digital doorstep.

So, don't let the fear of narrowing your focus hold you back. Embrace your niche, own your expertise, and watch your brand flourish. Your journey to success begins with cultivating and owning your "sauce."

a short list profitable niches:

  1. Finances: The topic of money is always a big one and something people are always interested in because it directly impacts every single human’s life in one way or another. Zeroing in on a specific subject that involves finances is a winner.

    Examples:

    • Helping individuals raise their corporate salary

    • Helping people build a lucrative business & business money tips

    • Methods on organizing and growing personal finances

…all of these are in different industries but revolve around money.

  2. Subscriptions: Whether your entire business is a subscription or you create a subscription-based service/product this can be highly profitable.

  3. AI: Artificial intelligence is the future and if you can find a way to add this into your business product or service, it will allow you to appeal to so many new people.

  4. Online Courses: Your experience, skills, and knowledge are POWERFUL. Even though we can search for any topic on the internet, online courses are needed because they curate needed information into a consolidated package, which is what guarantees results. This is something random internet searches can’t do well. Match that with a brand that people trust, are attracted to, and engaged with, you can create this one time and it generates revenue over and over again.
*Tea: this is something we’re building at DFS.

  5. Reselling: Whether repurposing vintage or you have an eye for finding valuable goods online and reselling them, this can be a fun and lucrative way to build your brand.
